Yahoo Privacy Policy Review

with 4 comments

I have a Yahoo! Mail account and today they updated the e-mail interface. With the migration to this update I was presented with a message (in small print) that if I chose to migrate I also accepted Yahoo’s terms. I am up late so I’ve started to read the agreements.

Yahoo! Global Communications Additional Terms of Service for Yahoo! Mail and Yahoo! Messenger

1c Please note that your Yahoo! Messenger account is tied to your Yahoo! Mail account. Therefore, your use of Yahoo! Messenger and all Yahoo! Messenger services will be subject to the TOS and laws applicable to the Applicable Yahoo! Company in Section 10. By using the Services, you consent to allow Yahoo!’s automated systems to scan and analyze all incoming and outgoing communications content sent and received from your account (such as Mail and Messenger content including instant messages and SMS messages) including those stored in your account to, without limitation, provide personally relevant product features and content, to match and serve targeted advertising and for spam and malware detection and abuse protection. Unless expressly stated otherwise, you will not be allowed to opt out of this feature. If you consent to this ATOS and communicate with non-Yahoo! users using the Services, you are responsible for notifying those users about this feature.

7a You understand and agree that the Services are provided “AS-IS” and that Yahoo! assumes no responsibility for the timeliness, deletion, mis-delivery, or failure to store any user communications or personalization settings. You also understand that Yahoo! is not responsible for the security or privacy of communications sent via the Services. The prior sentences in this clause do not apply to you if Yahoo! Deutschland provides you with your Yahoo! Mail account.

6 You acknowledge, consent and agree that Yahoo! may access, preserve and disclose your account information and Content if required to do so by law or in a good faith belief that such access preservation or disclosure is reasonably necessary to: (i) comply with legal process; (ii) enforce the TOS; (iii) respond to claims that any Content violates the rights of third parties; (iv) respond to your requests for customer service; or (v) protect the rights, property or personal safety of Yahoo!, its users and the public.

After reading it all, these are the ones that bothers me. I can not opt out of having my personal e-mail analyzed and used by Yahoo!. It means that they have a bunch of personal information about me that can be “guessed” by advertisers using that information. Yahoo! have no responsibility for my security and privacy on their service. They will disclose my personal information even to a copyright claim, which means a private organization or individual.

Does anyone know of a great webmail provider that does have their customers interest as their core service?
